Since the beginning of recorded human history, there has always been two types of humans: regular and enhanced. Enhanced humans – those born with power – have no choice in the matter; it’s a recessive trait passed on through families and bloodlines. Still, regular and enhanced humans have gotten along, for the most part. Until now.

A group of enhanced humans, calling themselves The Institution, unleashed a vicious terrorist attack on the West Coast of the United States in 2005, wiping out Washington, Oregon, California, as well as the western parts of Idaho and Nevada. An estimated 49 million people, both regular and enhanced, died that day.

As a result, the government crackdown began. It is now illegal to be born with powers. Anyone found to be harboring enhanced humans are branded as traitors and executed. Those with powers are either killed outright or sent to Jonestown Prison, supposedly where they will be rehabilitated. However, Jonestown is actually where scientists employed by a tiny sector of the government secretly experiment on enhanced humans and try to find ways to isolate and replicate these powers. This is only known to a select few, and they don’t want that information out in public. Yet.

It’s not genocide. It’s self-defense.

We take to the streets of New York City, where everything’s gone topsy-turvy. It’s practically a madhouse. And it’s only just begun.

hecatescurse: (firefly | i'll make a man out of you)
Title: Multiple Choice
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hecatescurse
Fandom: Firefly
Gift for: [livejournal.com profile] hunters_retreat
Characters/Pairing: Malcolm Reynolds/Simon Tam
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2241
Disclaimer: I don’t own Firefly or Serenity. I wish I owned Mal.
Spoilers/Warnings: This takes place after Serenity, but I don’t think there are specific spoilers. There’s an alluded spoiler.
Summary: Mal has four answers prepared if Simon ever asks him why he’s fussing over him (despite the fact that Mal doesn’t fuss). Only one of them is actually true.
Author’s Note: The prompt for this was, “They need to lay low for a while and Mal takes one of the Tams to keep them safe. It becomes far more romantic when Inara sends them to a 'safehouse' that is built for Companions.” This is my first time actually writing Firefly fic, so I hope it turned out alright! And a huge thank you to [livejournal.com profile] rocketgirl2 for the beta job!

Inara notices that he never questions Simon surviving the Alliance. That, at least, is fact for Mal.  )

Title: Life on Mars
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hecatescurse
Fandom: Castle/Firefly
Characters/Pairing: Malcolm Reynolds, Kaylee Frye, Jayne Cobb, Simon Tam, River Tam, Kate Beckett
Word Count: 478
Rating: PG
Summary: "Kaylee, would you mind explaining how exactly she came to be on my ship?"
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] tvrealm - challenge was to write a character into another fandom. I could be persuaded to continue this, maybe...I may or may not ship Mal/Kate already.

Her being healthy don’t exactly give me reassurance, Doctor. )
